This chocolate fondue recipe was one of the first recipes I ever posted on this blog back in 2010. My friends and I have had fondue nights for years now, and while everyone always loves the gluten-free cheese fondue, the chocolate version is what really gets people excited.
Dipping strawberries and marshmallows into warm, melty chocolate never gets old. The fondue itself is naturally gluten-free, but if you have celiac disease or need to avoid gluten, make sure all your dippers are gluten-free too. Once someone dips regular bread into the pot, it’s contaminated for everyone who needs to avoid gluten.

Ingredient Notes
- Dark Chocolate – Use good quality chocolate here. This recipe is simple enough that the quality really matters. You can also do milk chocolate if you prefer.
- Heavy Cream – The fat content is important. Don’t substitute with milk or the chocolate won’t melt properly.
- Salt – Just a pinch enhances the chocolate flavor.

Serving Suggestions
If you need to keep this gluten-free, make sure all your dippers are gluten-free.
Fresh strawberries, bananas and marshmallows are all naturally gluten-free and classic for a reason, but here’s where things get really fun. I love serving this with cubes of fluffy gluten-free angel food cake that soaks up chocolate like a dream. Cut the cake into bite-sized cubes before your guests arrive. They’ll disappear fast.
I also love serving homemade gluten-free peanut butter cookies with flaky sea salt. The peanut butter and chocolate combo is unbeatable, and having warm cookies ready to dip takes this from dessert to an experience. If you really want to go all out, cut up some of my fudgy gluten-free brownies into squares. Yes, it’s chocolate on chocolate, and yes, it’s absolutely worth it!
TIP
If you’re serving this at a party with gluten-free guests, set up a separate fondue pot just for gluten-free dippers. Once regular bread or cookies get dipped into the chocolate, it’s contaminated and no longer safe for anyone with celiac disease.
Recipe FAQs
I usually prep all my dippers ahead of time so I’m not scrambling when guests arrive. The fondue itself is best made right before serving, but you can measure out your ingredients earlier in the day.
Keep the heat low and gentle. If your fondue starts to thicken as it sits, just add a splash more cream and stir. It’ll smooth right back out.

Storage instructions
This chocolate fondue is best enjoyed fresh and warm. If you do have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently over low heat on the stovetop, adding a splash of cream if needed to bring back that silky texture.

Gluten-Free Chocolate Fondue
Ingredients
- 8 ounces heavy cream
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 12 ounces dark chocolate - roughly chopped
- 2 cups gluten-free dippers of choice - strawberries, bananas, gluten-free graham crackers, gluten-free brownies, marshmallows, etc.
**Use the toggle button above to turn the instruction photos on and off!
Instructions
- In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream and salt over medium-low heat until hot, about 5 minutes.
- Add the chopped dark chocolate and stir until completely melted and smooth, about 5 minutes.
- Pour into a fondue pot to keep warm and serve immediately with your gluten-free dippers.
- If the fondue begins to feel a little stiff, add a teaspoon of heavy cream and stir.
Notes
- If using an electric fondue pot: You can melt the chocolate directly in the fondue pot on low heat. Just add the cream and salt, heat until hot, then stir in the chocolate until melted.
- No fondue pot? No problem. Keep the chocolate warm in the saucepan over very low heat and serve from there, or transfer to a small slow cooker on the warm setting.
